Prof. Dr. Anouck Haverbeke


EBVS® European Veterinary Specialist in Behavioural Medicine

Anouck Haverbeke qualified as a veterinarian from Ghent University (Belgium) in 2001 and defended her thesis about horses’ welfare at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain). Subsequently she obtained a PhD in Ethology at the University of Namur (Belgium) in 2009.
Since 2013, she is EBVS© European Veterinary Specialist in Behavioural Medicine (ECAWBM-BM).
In 2021, she has been nominated Professor in Veterinary Behaviour Medicine at the University of Ghent. Actually, she is Vice-President of the European College in Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine.
Next to conducting veterinary behavioural consultations at Vet Ethology, she is teaching animal behaviour in collaboration with different institutions and private institutes. She is a frequent lecturer in Belgium and abroad on the topic of Animal Behaviour and human-animal interactions.
She is author and co-author of different international publications. The current teaching and research projects include (1) effect of positive training methods on dogs and horses, (2) the effect of olfactory enrichment with essential oils on the welfare of dogs, horses, cats and rabbits, (3) the influence of different housing conditions on the welfare of horses, (4) grief in dogs. Some of these research projects are conducted in collaboration with the Salto research group, Agro- and Biotechnology from Odisee University College.
