Dr. Mike Adkesson is a graduate with honors from the University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at the same university and a residency in zoological medicine at the Saint Louis Zoo. He is a diplomate of both the American College of Zoological Medicine and the European College of Zoological Medicine.
Dr. Adkesson is the Vice President of Clinical Medicine for the Chicago Zoological Society, overseeing hospital operations and veterinary staff at Brookfield Zoo. With a passion for conservation medicine, Dr. Adkesson also oversees the Society’s conservation program in Peru focusing on marine conservation, in particular penguins and pinnipeds. An active researcher, he is the author of numerous scientific publications and book chapters, holds adjunct faculty positions with the University of Illinois and Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru, and is a mentor to multiple students every year. Dr. Adkesson is a tireless advocate for the advancement of his profession and presently serves as the president-elect for the American Association of the Zoo Veterinarians.
