Simon graduated with Honours from Glasgow University Veterinary School in 1994. He gained his Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Diploma in Zoological Medicine in 2002, RCVS Specialist in Zoo & Wildlife Medicine status in 2003 and his Diploma of the ECZM (Zoo Health Management) in 2012. He is currently Past President of the European College of Zoological Medicine and was President of ECZM from 2016-2019. He is also a past President of the British Veterinary Zoological Society. He has acted as examiner for the RCVS Diploma in Zoological Medicine on several occasions over the last 12 years. He holds an Honorary Clinical Associate Professorship with Glasgow University, is a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Royal Society of Biology. He is currently Head of Veterinary Services to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, based at Edinburgh Zoo.
