Franciscus attended the University of Melbourne, graduating with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 2003. He worked in private practice for a short period of time before working as a locum veterinarian for Zoos Victoria. In 2007, he started a zoo residency training program at Healesville Sanctuary. During this time he completed his Masters of Veterinary Science with his research focusing on diseases of Australian reptiles. In 2009 Franciscus was accepted as a member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in the field of medicine of Australian wildlife. He became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2013 in the Herpetology discipline.
Franciscus has a strong interest in conservation medicine and applied clinical research.
