The Executive Committee of the EBVS is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Lidewij Wiersma. Dr Wiersma is a graduate of Bristol University (United Kingdom), where she completed a bachelors degree in immunology and virology at the medical faculty and a veterinary degree at the veterinary faculty. During her veterinary degree, she spent a year as an Erasmus exchange student at the Ecole nationale vétérinaire d'Alfort (France). After graduating, she completed a European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP) residency programme at Utrecht University (Netherlands) after which she worked for the German national public health institute, the Robert Koch institute, in Berlin. Dr Wiersma was awarded a PhD for studies on “Emerging viral respiratory zoonoses” that were carried out at the department of virology at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam (NL). She currently works with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome (Italy), where she is coordinating the laboratory unit of the animal health service. Dr Wiersma will take up the role of CEO from 1 January 2018.
