From the Editor
This is the second newsletter in the new electronic format since the move to the new EBVS website www.ebvs.eu. We are delighted that you like the new format newsletter and for all the feedback we received in the Diplomate survey. The EBVS online presence is continuing to increase. The website now includes a section for employment opportunities and revised FAQs. There is also a section listing current Executive committee, EBVS staff members and other committee members. The EBVS website is public and it does not create a good impression if there are blank spaces where there should be images! You may have noticed that a flag as a profile picture where no photo had been added. If you have chosen to remove/delete the country flag please consider adding a suitable professional photo or a photo reflecting your work. Read more about the updated website.
There is also a Facebook group for the general public, an increasing number of members in the Linked In group for EBVS Diplomates and communication to external stakeholders via the website, newsletter and @EUVetSpecialist on Twitter. According to Google Analytics, visits to the website have increased by over 60% compared to the same period last year! Please continue to use the website, and join our group on LinkedIn and Facebook.

The Diplomate survey – what you told us about EBVS
A survey was conducted by the EBVS communications committee to identify and evaluate different issues of importance, such as the use of the specialist title, EU recognition of training as a specialist, and perceptions of the EBVS. European Board of Veterinary Specialisation Award for outstanding contributions to veterinary specialisation
The ‘EBVS Specialisation Award’ was instituted by the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS) in 2013 “to acknowledge outstanding contributions to the course of veterinary specialisation in Europe” made by an individual or organisation. In 2017, the third award was presented to Professor Frank Gasthuys, Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, for his significant and outstanding contribution to specialization in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia in Europe and to veterinary specialization in Belgium and in Europe. The ‘EBVS Award for service’ was instituted by the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS) in 2013 “to acknowledge service to EBVS” made by an individual or organisation. In 2017, the award was presented to Professor Stephen May, Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgery, for his contributions as an EBVS Executive Committee member from 2012-2017. More …
ECEIM Diplomate honoured by British Prime Minister
British Prime Minister Theresa May recognised European College of Equine Internal Medicine Diplomate and Honorary member Professor Derek Knottenbelt with a Points of Light award on 9th December 2016. This award, which recognises outstanding individual volunteers, was given in recognition of Derek's work with ‘Vets with Horsepower’, a group of equine veterinarians who go on motorbike tours to raise funds for international animal and human charities by delivering veterinary continuing education. Update your Diplomate profile…
Remember to keep your details up-to-date in the EBVS database on www.ebvs.eu – this is essential for your European Veterinary Specialist registration. Have you added a recent photograph and a short resume to your Diplomate profile? This is very easy to do – just login (help is available if you have forgotten how to login) and upload a suitable professional image (of yourself or another suitable image) and a short profile. If you need an example resume check out the ones for the EBVS President, EBVS Past President, and EBVS Vice President.
Join the EBVS on social media
EBVS has had a LinkedIn group for EBVS Diplomates since March 2016. Diplomates who are members of LinkedIn can request access to this LinkedIn group. EBVS can also be found @EUVetSpecialist on Twitter and on Facebook. The Facebook page is a recent initiative and aims to provide information for the general public.

Meet - the new EBVS Secretary
Professor Josh Slater was elected to the role of EBVS Secretary at the 2017 AGM. He is a Diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM) based at the Royal Veterinary College in the UK. Prof Slater is a past president of the ECEIM, British Equine Veterinary Association and Federation of European Equine Veterinary Associations. He served as advisor / national technical official for biosecurity at the Equestrian disciplines at the Olympic Games in 2008 (Hong Kong), World Equestrian Games in 2014 and Olympic Games in 2012 (London). Country focus – Benelux
Benelux covers three different countries – Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg – and 346 European Veterinary Specialists from 25 of the 26 EBVS-recognised Colleges. There are no European Veterinary Specialists in veterinary clinical pathology based in the Benelux. Belgium has 172 European Veterinary Specialists from 22 EBVS Colleges. College focus – European Veterinary Parasitology College
The European Veterinary Parasitology College is a non-profit organisation that aims to advance veterinary parasitology in Europe. It has established guidelines for post-graduate education and experience prerequisite to become a specialist in the discipline of veterinary parasitology and examines veterinarians as specialists in veterinary parasitology. The EBVS President reports on his second year in office
EBVS President Professor Dominiek Maes reported at the Annual General Meeting in April that EBVS has worked hard on filing a Common Training Framework application and protecting the veterinary specialist title to better serve the public, its animals, and the veterinary profession. More …

EBVS Multiple choice question workshop
On Friday, April 21st 2017, the EBVS organized a workshop in Brussels that was attended by 15 Diplomates. The workshop dealt with the complex issue of developing multiple choice question s for college diplomate examinations. Chief Executive Officer of the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation
The European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS) is a non-profit organization responsible for recognizing, promoting, assuring and monitoring the quality of veterinary specialists within the European Union. The role will be on a 40-60% basis (2-3 days per week) for one year commencing on 1st January 2018 and may become a full-time and permanent position, subject to need and funding. The CEO is responsible for the management, implementation and communication of the EBVS Executive Committee (EC)-approved mission, strategic goals and objectives. The CEO will serve as professional representative of EBVS and provide direction and leadership toward the achievement of the organization's philosophy. The CEO will report to the Executive Committee (EC) of the EBVS. The CEO will be supported and assisted by the EBVS secretariat. Deadline for applications is August 31st 2017. More …

Clinical Instructor / Residency in Equine Internal Medicine, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich
The Equine Department of the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Zurich is offering a clinical instructor / residency position in Equine Internal Medicine starting October 1, 2017. The appointment includes clinical service in the specialty of Equine Internal Medicine and teaching of students on clinical rotations. Emergency duties include night and weekend shifts in all sections of the Equine Hospital (internal medicine, surgery, anaesthesia). A training program in Equine Internal Medicine according to the European College of Equine Internal Medicine, ACVIM or within the Swiss Equine Practitioner (FVH) track is offered and enrolment in one of the programs is a prerequisite for this appointment. Post-graduate training position (Residency) incorporating a taught Masters in small animal emergency and critical care. You will receive training in all aspects of emergency and critical care, and will be expected to study for the postgraduate Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECVECC). You will also contribute to undergraduate teaching as part of the undergraduate emergency and critical care clinical rotation. The EBVS aim for the ‘national representative’ role, is to broadcast the existence and purpose of the EBVS and European Veterinary Specialisation, within all countries in which EBVS Diplomates of any disciplines work. In line with the EBVS aims, we wish to nurture and promote the recognition, utilisation and availability of qualified veterinary speciality services to the public and the veterinary profession across all geographical areas, especially throughout Europe.
